Russia's lawless actions deepen Ukraine conflict's scars

Although discussions about peace in Ukraine are taking place in global forums, brutal force still dominates the battlefield. The Russians continue to commit war crimes, which they document themselves on social media. Recently, a video emerged online showing them killing another soldier.

Three years have passed since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The brutal conflict continues along a front stretching 1,000 kilometres. The fighting does not cease, nor does its level of brutality change. Thousands of soldiers die on both sides every day.

The Ukrainians are acutely aware that they cannot violate international law, as it would certainly provoke a negative reaction from Western countries assisting Kyiv. The Russians, however, are a different matter. Their barbarity continues unabated, as evidenced by another video published on social media, specifically on the Telegram platform. A portion of it also surfaced on the X portal.

The war in Ukraine: Footage from the front shows Russians ruthless to captured soldier

The footage depicts a soldier from the Ukrainian armed forces lying on the ground, injured. His comrade is beside him. Over them stands a Russian soldier, extracting information from the wounded man. He demands to know their unit, origins, and numbers. The wounded Ukrainian claims he is from the 82nd Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, near Sudzha in the Kursk region. He explains that he evacuated with his colleagues after a mine explosion, assuring that there were initially four of them, but now only two remain. The Russian demands the truth and ultimately shoots the wounded man, violating the Geneva Convention, which states that prisoners cannot be killed.

According to Article 2 of the Geneva Convention, prisoners "must always be treated humanely, and in particular protected against acts of violence, insults, and public curiosity." Additionally, "reprisals against them are prohibited." Prisoners should be evacuated from the battlefield to a special facility as soon as possible and treated with dignity. Unfortunately, the Russians disregard any law.
