Shadow fleet tanker averts disaster in Gulf of Finland
The tanker M/T Jazz, part of the "shadow fleet," experienced an engine failure at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland. The Finnish Coast Guard took action to prevent environmental damage. The ship was en route from Sudan to Primorsk.
The Finnish Coast Guard reported an engine failure on the tanker M/T Jazz, which is associated with the so-called shadow fleet. The vessel was drifting near the entrance to the Gulf of Finland, necessitating immediate intervention. A tugboat, a patrol boat, and a helicopter were dispatched to secure the ship against potential environmental damage.
The tanker was not carrying oil
The tanker M/T Jazz, measuring 600 feet in length, sails under the Panamanian flag and is designed for the transport of petroleum products and chemicals. Although it was not carrying oil, it had its own fuel reserves on board. The crew carried out repair work to prevent further drifting. The ship is currently anchored south of Hanko.
According to the Coast Guard, the situation is not related to the recent incident in the Gulf of Finland involving damage to undersea cables, namely the EstLink 2 power cable and several telecommunications cables. That incident occurred last week on Christmas Day.
The underwater infrastructure was not at risk due to the anchoring of M/T Jazz, the coast guard reported. It added that measures are currently being taken to ensure that, given the difficult weather conditions at sea, the ship does not run aground, suffer damage, or start leaking.
