According to the prosecutor's office, the bodies were found in a private house in the village of Mezurka, in the Tver region. Investigators from Tver suspect that the father is responsible for the murder.

The man then attempted to take his own life and is currently in hospital. Criminal proceedings for murder have been initiated. The family had six children.

"The gravest sin"

Family members of the murdered children are receiving necessary assistance, assured Larysa Mosolygina, the commissioner for children's rights in the region.

"The pre-holiday days have been overshadowed by the tragedy that struck the large family living in Mezurka. Four children perished. All necessary investigative actions are being carried out. The family is receiving the needed help. I will not reveal more details," wrote Mosolygina on her VKontakte social media profile.

She also emphasized that "the murder of an innocent child is one of the gravest sins in every religion, having no justification or forgiveness, not mitigated by any circumstances or reasons."
