Several minutes later, the eyes of the world turned to the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, where the newly elected pope, Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States, appeared for the first time. In his first words, already as Pope Leo XIV, he addressed the faithful gathered in the square: "Peace be with all of you."
Leo XIV is the first pope in the history of the Catholic Church to come from the United States—his election is an unprecedented event in the history of the papacy.
