Assad's new refuge: Russian citizenship on the horizon
Russian MP Alexei Zhuravlyov proposed that Bashar al-Assad receive Russian citizenship. Let's remember that the former president of Syria is hiding in Russia.
Many pieces of information provided by Russian media or government officials are elements of propaganda. Such reports are part of the information warfare carried out by the Russian Federation.
The former president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, who has obtained asylum in Russia, may receive Russian citizenship. Alexei Zhuravlyov, the chairman of the State Duma's defense committee, presented this proposal.
- Russia treats its allies humanely, unlike the USA, which quickly disposes of former friends. Therefore, if Yanukovych obtained citizenship, why not give it to Assad? - said Zhuravlyov, quoted by "Abzac".
Relatives and associates of Assad own apartments in Moscow
According to the "Financial Times", relatives and associates of Assad acquired at least 19 apartments in Moscow in 2019, valued at approximately CAD 54 million. Assad's brother, Hafez Makhlouf, owns 13 of them, and the wife of Assad's cousin, Rami Makhlouf, has two apartments.
The remaining four belong to cousins of the former president. The properties are registered to offshore companies.
Bashar al-Assad overthrown
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left the country's capital on Sunday night. He fled Damascus after opposition forces broke in, conducting a rapid offensive and capturing cities like Homs and Aleppo in one and a half weeks.
It was Russia that first confirmed that Assad "after negotiations with many participants of the Syrian conflict, left the office of the president of Syria and issued instructions for the peaceful transfer of power". The statement assured that Russia did not participate in these talks.
