As we look to natural remedies to support our health, we increasingly turn to plants appreciated in traditional medicine for centuries. One such plant is astragalus—an unassuming yet incredibly valuable plant with properties that may surprise even the most skeptical. Although it remains relatively unknown in Canada, its health potential is gaining many enthusiasts. Regular use of astragalus can provide tangible benefits to our bodies.

Astragalus – a natural way to boost immunity and energy

Astragalus membranaceus, also known as Huang Qi, is a plant with a rich history, originating from Central Asia. For millennia, it has been used in China, Mongolia, and Japan to strengthen the body and improve vitality. Traditional Chinese medicine considers astragalus one of the most important herbs, emphasizing its role in enhancing immunity and combating fatigue.

The most valuable part of astragalus is its root, which contains as many as 120 bioactive substances, including flavonoids, polysaccharides, triterpenes, amino acids, and minerals. Thanks to these constituents, this plant effectively supports the immune system, stimulates immune cells, and increases their numbers. These effects are particularly noticeable during the fall and winter when the body is more vulnerable to infections.

Moreover, astragalus positively influences lung function, reducing the risk of bronchitis and sinusitis. Its detoxifying properties help cleanse the body of toxins, translating into better skin condition, healthier hair, and overall well-being.

Astragalus root – the secret of vitality and health

The root of astragalus is a true treasure trove of nutrients, offering multiple health benefits. Regular consumption of preparations made from this plant can yield several advantages:

  • Strengthening the immune system – Astragalus stimulates the body's natural defence mechanisms, helping to fight infections and colds.
  • Support for the circulatory system – The plant helps maintain proper blood pressure, supports the heart, and regulates blood sugar levels.
  • Antioxidant action – Substances in astragalus neutralize free radicals, protecting cells from damage, aging, and the risk of developing cancer.
  • Boosting metabolism – Astragalus supports metabolism, potentially aiding in weight reduction.

It is also noteworthy for its adaptogenic properties. Astragalus helps the body cope with stress, which is becoming increasingly constant in our lives.

How to use astragalus daily?

Although astragalus is available in various forms, it is commonly found as powdered root or dietary supplements. Here are some ways to include it in your daily routine:

  • Decoction: The traditional method of preparing astragalus involves soaking about 6 grams of dried root in 400 millilitres of warm water. After mixing, the drink is ready for consumption.
  • Tincture: The chopped root should be soaked in alcohol (40-70%) and left in a dark place for at least two weeks. This extract can be used 2-3 times a week, one teaspoon at a time.
  • Cooking: Powdered astragalus root adds a delicate, sweet flavour to soups, sauces, or other dishes.

When to avoid astragalus?

While astragalus offers many benefits, there are certain contraindications to its use. It is not recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and people who have undergone transplants or suffer from autoimmune diseases.

Astragalus can improve immunity, boost energy, and help combat stress. It's a natural way to support the body, especially appreciated during periods of weakness.
