Bahamas travel alert: Crime concerns and shark threats
The Bahamas, a picturesque paradise for many tourists, could potentially be risky. The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning concerning these islands.
Renowned for their stunning beaches and captivating coral reefs, the Bahamas draw visitors from across the globe. However, the U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel warning for the islands. This alert is not related to the impending hurricane season or mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue or chikungunya. The primary concerns are crime and sharks.
The Department of State cautions against various crimes, including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults. According to "Bild," tourists are advised not to feel overly secure, as the warnings apply across the entire archipelago. Most reported crimes occur in Nassau and Freeport, located on the islands of New Providence and Grand Bahama. Particularly hazardous is the "Over the Hill" district in Nassau, where gang-related murders have taken place.
The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasizes vigilance. "Avoid walking alone after dark. Exercise particular caution in isolated areas and on deserted beaches. Refrain from leaving food and drinks unattended," states a communiqué as quoted by "Bild".
Shark threat
The American agency also raises concerns about sharks. Although the Bahamas are not commonly associated with numerous shark attacks, approximately 40 species of sharks inhabit the waters around the islands, some of which can be aggressive. In early February, two American tourists were attacked by a shark while swimming in Bimini Bay, resulting in serious injuries to one of them.
A fatal attack occurred in 2023. The victim was a 44-year-old American woman who was off the coast of the Bahamas. At the time of the attack, she was paddleboarding. "The victim suffered severe injuries to the right side of her body, including a torn hip area, and the right upper limb," reported a local police spokesperson. Although a rescuer arrived and attempted resuscitation, the woman's life could not be saved.
