In a world where quick snacks and ready-made products have dominated our kitchens, homemade yeast rolls are a return to the tradition and flavours we remember from childhood. These fragrant, fluffy baked goods bring back memories of shared moments spent in the kitchen — the warmth of the oven, the smell of butter, and the first bite of a still-warm roll. Grandma's recipe is more than just a list of ingredients — it's a piece of family history encased in delicate dough.

Yeast roll recipe

Yeast rolls are not only the taste of childhood but also a way to share moments in the kitchen and an aroma that fills the entire house. Thanks to grandma's proven recipe, I am sure they always turn out perfect — fluffy, delicate, and exceptionally delicious. It's a versatile bake that pairs perfectly with both breakfast and sweet desserts.

Ingredients:

  • 500 g of all-purpose flour,
  • 250 ml of warm milk,
  • 50 g of sugar,
  • 30 g of fresh yeast,
  • 1 egg,
  • 50 g of butter,
  • a pinch of salt,
  • 1 egg yolk for brushing,
  • 1 tablespoon of milk for brushing.

Preparation:

  1. Crumble the yeast into a small bowl, add sugar and warm milk, mix, and set aside for 10 minutes until it starts to activate.
  2. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add salt and the yeast mixture.
  3. Knead the dough, adding melted butter.
  4. When the dough becomes smooth and elastic, cover it with a cloth and leave it in a warm place for an hour to double in size.
  5. After it has risen, shape small rolls, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a cloth, and set aside for another 20 minutes.
  6. Then, brush them with beaten egg, sprinkle with your favourite toppings, and bake in the oven preheated to 175°C for about 15–20 minutes until they turn golden.

Filling for yeast rolls

Yeast rolls offer a great opportunity to experiment with fillings that can be tailored to our preferences. We can prepare them sweet, adding jam, chocolate cream, cheese, or seasonal fruits such as apples or blueberries. The savoury versions are just as delicious, with cheese, spinach, mushrooms, or even pieces of smoked meat. With the variety of toppings available, the rolls become a unique treat for any occasion, from family gatherings to work lunches. Just a bit of creativity is enough to create many culinary variations from one base recipe!
