Black ice chaos: 53‑car pile-up and severe snowstorm hit Korea
In South Korea, a 53-car pile-up caused by black ice following heavy snowfall injured eleven people.
On Wednesday, South Korea was struggling with heavy snowfall, which paralysed the country. In Yongin, near Seoul, about 48 centimetres of snow fell.
The portal "The Korea Herald" reported a pile-up at the highway exit near Wonju. Fifty-three cars collided there, and 11 people were injured. The police are investigating the causes of the accident, pointing to black ice as the main factor.
Analysis of surveillance recordings showed that the road was covered in "black ice". The snow disrupted traffic not only on the highways, but also in Seoul, where 18 routes were blocked. City authorities increased the number of metro services.
Significant disruptions in the Seoul region
Due to the snowstorm, more than 150 flights and 100 ferry services were cancelled or rescheduled. The Ministry of Interior and Safety announced that over 130 homes in Seoul lost power.
Power issues also affected other cities in the capital's metropolitan area. The heavy snowfall had a significant impact on the daily lives of South Korean residents.
