Brașov's towering Christmas tree toppled by strong winds

The Romanian city of Brașov proudly showcases the tallest natural Christmas tree in this part of the globe annually. This time, however, pride turned into disappointment as a strong wind toppled the giant decoration. Miraculously, no casualties have been reported.

The tree that was supposed to adorn the central Piața Sfatului square in Brașov is one of the tallest firs found in the area. Its lights were ceremoniously lit on November 29 at 6:00 PM Eastern Time.

Earlier, on November 13, the fir, which grew on communal agricultural land in Poiana Brașov, was transported to the city market. The authorities proudly presented the large Christmas tree on their Facebook page even before it was decorated.

The Christmas tree fell to the ground, crowded with bystanders around

The top of the Christmas tree stood about 26 metres above the square's surface. According to the organizers of the Christmas festivities inauguration in Brașov, the tree grew to a height of about 29 metres, meaning it was anchored about 3 metres deep in the ground.

This was not enough to secure the tallest festive installation in the town's history—and in all of Romania—as the wind toppled the roughly 17,000-kilogram fir on Monday.

In the recording posted on platform X, you can see the massive tree falling to the ground. It was a close call from tragedy. The heavy holiday decorations come crashing down while being surrounded by many bystanders.

Large red baubles scattered everywhere. Representatives of the order services were immediately on the scene. Officials approached the fallen gigantic Christmas tree with disbelief.
