Caraway infusion: A natural solution for digestion and heart health

Many herbs and spices have been used for centuries not only in the kitchen but also in home medicine cabinets. One of these unassuming yet remarkably effective ingredients is caraway. Although it is mainly associated with flavouring hearty dishes like cabbage or bread, caraway, in the form of an infusion, can work wonders.

After a heavy lunch or an overly large dinner, the body often signals that it needs support. The feeling of heaviness, bloating, discomfort — these ailments are probably familiar to everyone. Instead of reaching for pharmaceuticals, more and more people are returning to what has worked for generations. Caraway infusion is one of those natural remedies that not only provides relief after meals but also has several other valuable properties.

Why is it worth drinking caraway infusion?

Although we primarily associate caraway as a spice for hearty meals, in the form of an infusion, its benefits are much more extensive. It's not just a way to fight bloating or a feeling of fullness, but also a natural ally in taking care of the heart, cholesterol, and the body's overall balance. That is why more and more people choose a cup of caraway infusion not only on special occasions but also daily. What exact benefits can regular consumption of this drink bring?

  • Aids digestion — caraway stimulates the secretion of digestive juices and bile, alleviating bloating, colic, and the feeling of heaviness.
  • Lowers cholesterol levels — the compounds contained in caraway may help reduce "bad" LDL cholesterol, positively affecting the heart and circulatory system.
  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties — neutralizes free radicals and supports the body's natural immunity.
  • Soothes stomach pain and supports the intestines — the infusion is recommended for those dealing with irritable bowel syndrome or indigestion.

How to prepare caraway infusion?

Making this healthy drink is extremely simple:

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds,
  • 200 millilitres of hot water.

Preparation:

  1. Pour the caraway seeds into a cup or glass, then pour hot but not boiling water over them.
  2. Cover and let steep for about 10–15 minutes. Strain the infusion and drink it while still warm.
  3. It can be consumed 2–3 times a day, preferably after meals.

Which caraway should you choose for the infusion?

Although we often see only one type in stores, it's useful to know that there are several varieties of caraway. The best choice for making an infusion is traditional caraway (Carum carvi) — this is the kind we know well from the kitchen, where it is added to bread, cabbage, or potatoes. It has a distinctive, slightly anise-like aroma, and this is the variety that exhibits the most health benefits.

When shopping, it's worth ensuring that the caraway is in whole seeds — these best retain their qualities and can be easily brewed. The seeds should be dry, firm, and have an intense aroma. Avoid old, stale caraway that has already lost its essential oils — these oils are responsible for aiding digestion.
