Cardinal Parolin's health scare casts a shadow on the upcoming conclave

In the Vatican, final preparations are underway before the conclave. Meanwhile, reports from some Vatican journalists indicate that the health of 70-year-old Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin has suddenly deteriorated. The current Secretary of State of the Holy See is among the hierarchs with the most excellent chance of becoming pope.

What do you need to know?

  • Pope Francis passed away on 21 April 2025 at the age of 88, initiating the sede vacante period in the Catholic Church.
  • Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the current Secretary of State of the Holy See, is frequently mentioned as a candidate for the new pope.
  • Vatican journalists report that his health has suddenly deteriorated.

"According to multiple sources, yesterday afternoon an "alert" was triggered in the Vatican concerning the health of former Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who is considered one of the leading papal contenders" - wrote the well-known Vatican journalist Diane Montagna on platform X.

"The 70-year-old Cardinal reportedly suffered a sudden illness due to elevated blood pressure & was attended to by a medical team that assisted him for an hour," wrote the well-known Vatican journalist Diane Montagna on the platform X.

The conclave, during which the cardinal-electors will choose Francis's successor, will begin on 7 May (Eastern Time).

Chances for the papacy

Following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April 2025, the Catholic Church entered the sede vacante period, and Parolin's name is listed among the favourites to take the See of Peter. His diplomatic experience, moderate views, and alignment with Francis's approach make him appealing to cardinals seeking continuity with the current papacy. Parolin's Italian background is also advantageous, given the historical preference for Italian popes.

On social media platforms like X, Parolin is described as "Francis's right hand" and a "moderate candidate," reflecting his widespread perception. Users emphasize his pro-Palestinian and pro-Ukrainian stance, as well as his vision of Christianity as a strengthening force for Europe.

However, some highlight his cautious stand on gender ideology, which may be contentious among more liberal groups.

Parolin is viewed as a candidate who could "offer a few years of calm" following Francis's dynamic papacy, as noted by the website pch24.pl. His mediation skills and experience in managing the Roman Curia are key reasons for his candidacy. However, the competition at the conclave, which, according to the rules, will take place from May 6 to 11, 2025, will be intense, with other contenders, such as Cardinals Tagle and Erdő, also being mentioned.
