Celery juice: A morning boost packed with surprising benefits

It's customary to start the day with a cup of coffee or tea, and ideally, with water and lemon. However, a well-known health specialist, Dr. Eric Berg, recommends celery juice. The benefits of consuming it are remarkable. Here's why it's worth drinking every day.

Celery juice is gaining popularity due to its unique health properties. It's a trendy drink and a source of vitamins and minerals that support our health. Just one glass can provide plenty of folic acid, making it an excellent option for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Dr. Berg, who has extensive experience with intermittent fasting and the keto diet, mentions even more benefits of this drink.

Why is it worth drinking celery juice?

Celery is 95 percent water, making it an excellent hydrating food. Additionally, it has only 7 calories per 100 grams, so it certainly won't lead to weight gain (unless someone consumes about 20 kilograms of this vegetable daily). The vegetable contains fibre, which curbs hunger, improves digestion, and prevents constipation. It's a source of vitamins (primarily vitamin K, along with trace amounts of vitamins A and C), iron, calcium, and very little sodium, so the amount of sodium in the diet doesn't increase significantly. We can't forget about flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants.

Celery juice is also known for its diuretic properties. What does this mean in practice? It helps remove excess water from the body, which contributes to reducing swelling. Drinking it has a beneficial effect on our skin and may alleviate symptoms of eczema and acne. Studies show that regular celery consumption may also lower blood pressure. Moreover, celery juice lowers blood glucose levels in prediabetic individuals.

Celery juice contains other important components

We're referring to phytonutrients, which are plant chemical compounds with antioxidant effects. The four most important are kaempferol, apigenin, 3-n-butylphthalide, and caffeic acid. Kaempferol has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. This component is helpful in fighting skin, liver, and colon cancer.

Apigenin is a polyphenol that helps relax muscles. It also supports proper sleep hygiene and may help lower blood pressure. It also has antidiabetic properties. 3-n-butylphthalide plays a significant role in recovery, especially after a stroke. It supports the regeneration of the nervous system and improves blood microcirculation. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

The last component is caffeic acid. It primarily helps protect our body (especially the stomach and intestines) from ulcers. According to experts, this compound helps maintain proper blood sugar levels and slows down the absorption of carbohydrates, thus preventing sudden insulin spikes.

How to drink celery juice?

The first rule is to drink it immediately after waking up, i.e., on an empty stomach. You can add lemon or lime juice to enhance the taste and add vitamin C. It tastes best with apple, banana, and fresh ginger. Just wash the ingredients, chop them, and blend, then strain through a sieve. However, it's important to remember that celery is a strong allergen, and not everyone can consume it.
