China urges halt to U.S.'s 'Golden Dome' missile project
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning expressed "serious concern" on Wednesday regarding the missile defence shield project announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. China has appealed to abandon the "Golden Dome" project, which has a "clear offensive implications."
The Chinese authorities warn that this plan will escalate the militarization of outer space and the risk of an arms race, stated Mao during a briefing in Beijing.
President Trump announced on Tuesday that he selected the new shield project named "Golden Dome," which is expected to cost $175 (CAD 243) billion, be completed by the end of his term, and provide nearly 100 percent efficacy.
Spokeswoman Mao assessed that the U.S. plan "violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability. China is seriously concerned about this," she added.
She added that these actions violate the principles of peaceful use of space, contribute to the militarization of outer space and the risk of an arms race.
"U.S. obsession"
The spokeswoman criticized the United States that the country "is obsessed with seeking absolute security for itself," in line with the "America First" principle.
Mao called on the American side to take actions aimed at increasing mutual strategic trust between major powers and maintaining global strategic stability.
