Chokeberry preserves: The seasonal superfood for oatmeal lovers

During the fall, I choose dishes that warm me from the inside, providing energy and vitamins. Recently, while going through my pantry, I found a jar of preserves that turned out to be the perfect addition to oatmeal. I can prepare a bowl full of nutrition in just 2 minutes for breakfast or lunch while working.

I add fresh fruit in the summer, but in fall and winter, I opt for additions that I can mix with hot oatmeal. I want the meal to warm my stomach and benefit my health. That's why I was so pleased with the chokeberry preserve I got from my mom. It turns out this addition complements oatmeal wonderfully.

The forgotten chokeberry is full of valuable nutrients

Chokeberries are primarily rich in antioxidants. The tart skin can deter many people from trying these fruits, but in preserves, this is not a problem. From chokeberries, you can make not only preserves but also delicious juice or liqueur.

Remembering chokeberry preserves when you're feeling under the weather is good. They contain a significant amount of vitamin C and have anti-inflammatory properties. They also support the digestive system, helping to prevent constipation. Furthermore, they positively affect vision, help lower blood pressure, and reduce bad cholesterol levels.

What can you use chokeberry preserves for?

I'm uncertain if I have enough preserves for all my experiments, but I already know that chokeberry preserve is delicious not only as an addition to oatmeal but also when paired with blue cheese. Add it to a vinaigrette and drizzle it over a salad with arugula, blue cheese, roasted pear, and walnuts.

My mom's chokeberry preserve has a light consistency, making it an excellent sauce for pouring over pancakes, classic crepes, or waffles.

How to make quick oatmeal with chokeberry in 2 minutes?

Personally, I prefer oatmeal cooked with water because it is lighter than when prepared with milk. However, if you're craving creamier oatmeal, add either regular or plant-based milk, such as oats, almonds, or coconut.

Ingredients:

  • 100 g instant oatmeal,
  • 200 mL water,
  • A pinch of salt,
  • 1 tablespoon of honey,
  • 2 tablespoons of shelled walnuts,
  • 2 tablespoons of chokeberry preserves.

Instructions:

  1. Pour water over the oatmeal and bring it to a boil. Once it starts bubbling, remove it from the stove.
  2. Mix in a tablespoon of honey and crushed walnuts.
  3. Place 2 tablespoons of chokeberry preserves on top.
