Conor McGregor and Donald Trump met in honour of St. Patrick's Day. The two men have long admired each other. The US President called the fighter his favourite Irishman and also praised his unique tattoos.

McGregor seemed to envy the politician's position because after their talks, he announced on Instagram that he also wants to become a leader. In his country, he primarily aims to address issues related to migration.

The former UFC champion believes that the local government is not doing enough to address this issue. He declared that "Our government is the government of zero action with zero accountability."

Conor McGregor detailed an ambitious plan, announcing that Ireland must implement the EU migration plan by June 2026. However, the presidential elections will take place in November of this year. The 36-year-old believes he is the only one brave enough to oppose the government's policy by choosing to not sign the law.

"Although I oppose greatly this pact, it is neither mine nor government’s choice to make. It is the people of Ireland’s choice! Always! This is the future of Ireland with me as President" — he urged.

The athlete's announcement met with mixed reactions on the island. It was criticized by, among others, Micheál Martin, the leader of one of the largest parties. A photo showing Conor McGregor and Donald Trump shaking hands and smiling also sparked controversy due to the celebrity's past.

Conor McGregor's controversial past

The award-winning mixed martial arts champion was convicted of sexual assault in 2024, stemming from an incident that took place in 2018 at a hotel in Dublin. The victim is Nikita Hand. The MMA legend admitted to cheating on his wife and having an encounter with another woman, but maintains that it happened with the victim's consent.

The court thought otherwise and ordered the Irishman to pay approximately 375,000 CAD to the plaintiff. Donald Trump's friend also faced charges a few years ago for assaulting a man in a Dublin pub.
