Since mid-April 2023, conflict has erupted in Sudan between government forces and the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war broke out due to a dispute within the alliance that, two years earlier, overthrew the Western-backed government and assumed power.

The main figures in the latest stage of the conflict are General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who took the country's helm after the 2021 coup, and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, formerly one of the Sudanese army's more influential figures and, since 2023, the chief commander of the RSF.

Darfur has been devastated in the past by decades-long ethnic cleansing. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo led these actions - leader of the Arab Janjaweed and now the commander of the RSF.
