Declining effectiveness: Russian troops struggle in Ukraine

The effectiveness of Russian troops in Ukraine is declining, reports the DeepState project, citing the latest data. According to estimates, in the past month, Russia occupied 132 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory, which is a significant decrease compared to previous months.

  • Russian troops occupied 132 square kilometres of Ukraine in March - according to data from the DeepState project.
  • This is significantly less than in November of last year when they captured 730 square kilometres.
  • However, the intensity of fighting has increased in the Pokrovsk direction.

According to the infographic published by the DeepState project, the Russian army recorded its greatest success in November of last year, capturing 730 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory. In December, this number decreased to 394 square kilometres, and in January of this year to 324 square kilometres. Conversely, in March of this year, Russian troops occupied 132 square kilometres.

Analysts from DeepState, who constantly monitor the situation on the front, emphasized that "the effectiveness of Russian troops is constantly declining."

Despite this, as noted, the Russians have not reduced the number of attacks at all. As summarized in a communiqué on Telegram: "The intensity of fighting in the Pokrovsk direction began to clearly increase in the second half of March and reached the level of late 2024, when Ukrainian defences south of the city began to crumble."

Ukraine. No drone attacks reported

Meanwhile, according to government communications and media reports, the night from Monday to Tuesday was the first in a long time since Russia did not use strike drones against Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force only reported Russian strikes using two Kh-59/69 cruise missiles, launched by tactical aviation in the Zaporizhia region in the southeast of the country. "Both missiles were shot down by air defence," was stated in the daily communiqué.

According to the Ukrainska Pravda portal, the lack of drone attacks by Russia may be related to the interview given by U.S. President Donald Trump to NBC on Sunday. In it, Trump stated that he is "angry" with Vladimir Putin and Putin's questioning of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky's legitimacy. He also threatened that if a truce is not reached due to Russia's fault, he would impose "secondary tariffs" on Russian oil.
