Disney's "Snow White" profits pale as controversies swirl

American pre-screenings of "Snow White" with Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot in leading roles have begun. Unfortunately, ticket sales are likely to be disappointing for Disney—the film is performing worse than, for example, "Kung Fu Panda 4".

According to Deadline, we have the results from American cinemas regarding pre-screenings of "Snow White". These results do not inspire much optimism for Disney executives, as the production earned revenues of around 5 million CAD. This places it just above "Maleficent 2" with Angelina Jolie (3.3 million CAD) or Tim Burton's "Dumbo" (3.7 million CAD). Neither production was a massive commercial hit.

Will "Snow White" disappoint financially? The first results are worrying

The situation starts to become unpleasant when considering that "Snow White" had a budget of up to 387 million CAD. Additionally, in many states, it's spring break, so families are often on vacation and avoiding theatres.

Deadline refers to its own research, claiming that in the USA alone, as many as 94% of respondents were aware that "Snow White" would soon hit theatres. However, only 39% of them said they were interested in the film and might see it in theatres.

"Snow White" had its share of controversies—the issue of the dwarf casting was problematic. Many accused actress Rachel Zegler after several interviews of not respecting the original, and Gal Gadot divided many fans due to some of her political views.

And although this has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the movie itself, it still may have influenced some to forgo seeing the film.

Reviewers rate "Snow White" harshly—currently, on Rotten Tomatoes, it has only 46% positive ratings, which is lower than that of "Maleficent" or the live-action "Aladdin."
