The European Commission expressed concern over Elon Musk's actions as the owner of platform X in the context of the German elections. Henna Virkkunen, Commissioner for Digital Policy, in a conversation with "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung," noted that the situation is being closely observed. She emphasized that she would not hesitate to take further steps if necessary.

Proceedings against platform X were initiated at the end of 2023 due to suspicions of violating the European Union's Digital Services Act. This act prohibits promoting disinformation and creating threats to elections. Due to their complexity, Virkkunen acknowledged that concluding the proceedings before the Bundestag election might be difficult.

Violations by X

The European Commission has initiated proceedings against platform X to investigate potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Concerns have arisen following Elon Musk's acquisition of the portal over insufficient transparency and counteraction to disinformation. These issues include a lack of effective content moderation and improper use of the portal's interface.

The DSA regulation, crucial for the digital single market, aims to ensure oversight over service providers and protect freedom of expression. It requires large-scale platforms like X to minimize risks to users. If the allegations against Musk's platform are confirmed, it may face a fine of up to 6% of its global revenue.

The European Commission plans to cooperate closely with online platforms to prevent the promotion of radical content. A meeting is scheduled for January 24th at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time between the EC representatives, key platforms including X, and German authorities. The goal is to ensure that content is not excessively promoted. In both cases, EU actions aim to protect consumers and ensure greater accountability from internet platforms. The outcomes of investigations could significantly impact the future operations of major digital players in Europe, which may also encourage competitiveness and innovation in this sector.

Musk as a threat

In an article published in "Die Welt," American historian Timothy Snyder warns about Elon Musk's impact on democracy. Snyder emphasizes that Musk, as one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, has a significant influence on international politics. According to Snyder, Musk and Putin are in constant contact, which could negatively affect the free world.

Elon Musk is gaining disproportionate influence in American politics, sparking controversy. His support for Trump and involvement in government reforms demonstrate how wealth can shape policy, often bypassing democratic control mechanisms. Supporters fear deregulation that favours his interests.

Snyder notes that Musk supports extreme political movements like Brexit or the American "America First" movement, aiming to weaken democratic institutions. The historian highlights that Musk's and Putin's actions aim to dismantle the international order based on state sovereignty and human rights. Snyder indicates that the European Union, based on the rule of law, can limit the power of international oligarchy.

Musk does not shy away from provocations in international politics. His humorous yet controversial comments about the Canadian prime minister, interpreted as provocations, show how his influence crosses borders and becomes part of the international discussion on leadership and diplomacy.

According to Snyder, Germany is a key country in Europe that could become the centre of resistance against the influences of Musk and Putin. The historian warns that if Germany does not understand the scale of the threat, other countries may not have the chance to defend themselves. Snyder emphasizes that Musk's goal is destroying states and human rights by promoting individualism. As an influential magnate, Musk embodies a potential danger to sustainable political development.
