European unity calls for stronger U.S. ties, backing Ukraine
At the summit in Brussels on Thursday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that European leaders agreed that Europe requires the strongest possible transatlantic ties with the new American administration. He confirmed that the discussion with President Volodymyr Zelensky focused on security guarantees.
European countries are united, with a few minor exceptions, in their readiness to strengthen support for Ukraine. We all feel, and it was clear to everyone, that it is crucial to support Ukraine before the change of power in the United States and before any potential negotiations, Tusk told journalists.
- Everyone says the same thing. I sense in Poland that people are increasingly weary of the war. Let's imagine how tired the Ukrainians are because it's somewhat unfair to say we are tired - he remarked.
- It is, however, a fact, and therefore we must do everything to end this war as quickly as possible, but not as a defeat for Ukraine. Of those 27 leaders, 25 or 24 understand this very clearly - he emphasized.
Security guarantees
As the prime minister added, during the conversation with Zelensky, the leaders discussed peace guarantees. It does not involve sending troops because - as Tusk emphasized - "for now, no one is seriously talking about it."
The real topic of the discussion was how Ukraine would like to define security guarantees and what they would consist of - he stated.
Virtually everyone at the table concurred. He mentioned that Europe needs the strongest possible transatlantic ties, including with the new American administration.
