"We express hope that the remaining phases of the revolution will be managed in a way that secures a peaceful, unified and stable system," stated Afghanistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement issued after the rebels captured Damascus and overthrew President Assad.

The fall of Assad. Rebels capture Syrian capital

Syrian rebels announced early Sunday morning, Eastern Time, the capture of the country's capital, Damascus, and the overthrow of Assad, who had ruled the country with an authoritarian grip for 24 years.

This marks the latest stage in the civil war that has been ongoing since 2011. Russia, Iran, and Tehran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah supported Assad. The Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and his family members, who fled Damascus, are in Russia, where they have received political asylum, Reuters reported, based on Russian media citing Kremlin sources.
