FBI urges urgent security upgrades for messaging app users
The FBI is warning users of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Signal about new security vulnerabilities. The federal agency urges immediate changes to app settings and the implementation of additional protective measures to counter the growing cyber threat, according to a report by Forbes.
The FBI indicates that current default settings in these communication applications may not provide adequate protection against increasingly sophisticated attack methods.
Cybersecurity experts emphasize that the issue primarily concerns data protection mechanisms, such as end-to-end encryption. Although encryption should theoretically ensure security, it has proven insufficient against certain types of threats.
Particular attention is drawn to data stored locally on users' devices. The FBI warns that inadequate protection of this data could lead to the leakage of confidential information, such as credit card numbers, passwords, or personal data.
Microsoft and security measures
In response to reports of security vulnerabilities, Microsoft has updated its Recall system, which now better identifies and protects sensitive data. The company assures that information such as passwords or identification numbers will not be saved or stored if they are detected as vulnerable to threats.
The FBI and security experts suggest that users take immediate action to enhance security. Recommendations include:
- Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA).
- Regularly updating apps to the latest versions.
- Frequently changing access passwords.
- Setting restrictions on access to message history and backups.
The FBI also highlights the issue of users relying on outdated versions of communication apps. Such software is particularly susceptible to attacks, which can lead to leaks of personal and business data.
Threats related to backups
An FBI report indicates that data stored in the cloud or on local devices can be vulnerable to attacks. Even encrypted messages can be intercepted during backup creation. Users are advised to use local, encrypted backups as much as possible and to minimize storing sensitive data in the cloud.
The FBI also called on major operating system manufacturers, such as Microsoft, Apple, and Google, to work more closely on improving security standards. This cooperation aims to respond more quickly to detected vulnerabilities and ensure better user protection.
According to the latest data, in the last quarter, the number of attempted attacks on messenger users increased by more than 150%. Increasingly, not only private individuals but also business and institutional accounts are being targeted. The FBI warns that ignoring the issue could lead to serious consequences, including data loss and financial losses.
