Fico's visit to Russia raises EU unity concerns amid tensions

The German press is sharply criticizing Prime Minister Robert Fico's visit to Russia, accusing him of acting against Slovakia's best interests. The politics of Slovakia and Hungary could threaten EU unity, a significant concern in the context of Donald Trump's presidency.

German commentators are not sparing in their criticism of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico for his visit to Russia. They argue that this visit runs counter to Slovakia's interests.

Policies pursued by Slovakia and Hungary could weaken the cohesion of the European Union, which is particularly dangerous in light of Donald Trump's presidency.

Fico under fire

Reinhard Veser from "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" emphasizes that the Slovak opposition accuses Fico of betrayal, and they have grounds to do so. Russia, while targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure, has so far spared the gas transmission network through which Russian gas continues to flow.

The transit agreement is set to expire at the end of the year, and Ukraine does not plan to renew it. This places Slovakia and Hungary in a difficult situation, as both countries continue to import a significant portion of their gas from Russia.

Veser argues that Fico should be discussing gas supplies with Ukraine, not Russia. Ukraine, although uninterested in direct dealings with Russia, is open to agreements with third countries like Azerbaijan. By negotiating with the Kremlin, Fico acts against Slovakia's interests.

Choice of allies

Viktoria Grossmann from "Sueddeutsche Zeitung" notes that after the visit to Moscow, it is clear where Fico sees his allies. The Prime Minister of Slovakia, who blames Ukraine for the energy crisis, should be seeking alternative energy sources. Instead, Fico turns to the Kremlin, consistent with his pro-Russian domestic policies.

"Frankfurter Rundschau" highlights the lack of criticism within the EU regarding Fico's visit to Putin. This visit reinforces the perception that solidarity with Ukraine is weakening, which is troubling for the entire Union. U.S. President Donald Trump might attempt to deepen divisions in the EU, complicating the resolution of trade disputes.

"Leipziger Volkszeitung" points out that the actions of Fico and Viktor Orban expose the EU's vulnerabilities. The conflict involving Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and the Baltic States poses significant risks. The EU is not prepared for changes in the White House, and a united Union is essential for representing European interests in light of potential actions by Trump.
