Fiery collision in North Sea prompts major rescue effort

In the North Sea, off the coast of the United Kingdom, a collision occurred between two ships—a tanker and a commercial vessel. Terrifying recordings capturing the drama unfolding at sea have appeared on the Internet. A rescue operation is underway.

The collision between the commercial vessel and the tanker occurred off the coast of the United Kingdom on Monday (March 10) around noon. According to the BBC, the collision took place off the coast of East Yorkshire in the North Sea. The alarm was raised around 4:48 AM Eastern Time.

A rescue operation is currently underway at the scene. According to the services, a rescue helicopter is participating in the operations, as well as several boats, a fixed-wing aircraft, and other units capable of extinguishing the ongoing fire at sea.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, an organization involved in water rescue in the UK and Ireland, reports that many people evacuated the ships after the collision. According to RNLI information, both ships were engulfed in flames. Nothing is currently known about any injured persons or potential casualties from this incident.

Recordings from the collision site have appeared online. They show fire and huge plumes of smoke rising into the air due to the fire.

Unconfirmed information suggests that the tanker involved in the incident is the Stena Immaculate, flying under the American flag. The other vessel is the container ship Solong, flying under the Portuguese flag. Stena Immaculate had sailed from the Greek port of Agioi Theodoroi and was anchored near Hull. Meanwhile, Solong was travelling from the Scottish port of Grangemouth to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
