Refrigerators can host more bacteria and microorganisms than other kitchen appliances. Most accumulate on the shelves and in the lower drawers, where deli meats, fruits, and vegetables are commonly stored. Therefore, cleaning at least once a month should be the standard. How can this be achieved?

Cleaning the refrigerator with household products

Regular cleaning of the refrigerator's interior is crucial for the health of stored food, preventing mould, and it also positively impacts the appliance's lifespan. Regular cleaning helps eliminate unpleasant odours that may result from storing foods like smoked fish or mouldy cheeses. It's important to avoid chemical cleaners that could be harmful to your health and the food.

Before starting the cleaning, prepare a soft cloth, cotton swabs, baking soda, vinegar, salt, and lemon juice. Start by emptying the refrigerator and removing all shelves and drawers. Soak them for a few minutes in warm water and clean them with vinegar. Be sure to remove expired food as well.

Don't forget about the water container mounted at the back of the refrigerator. If you decide to move the refrigerator, rinse the container with vinegar to clean any sediment. Water enters it through an opening in the rear wall inside the refrigerator, which can be cleared using a special stick or tube. Cleaning the drain with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda won't damage the materials.

It's crucial to regularly clean this drain. If it gets blocked, for example by food remnants, instead of entering the container, water can reach the bottom of the refrigerator. This issue not only results in flooding the lower drawers but can also freeze shelves in the freezer compartment located under the refrigerator.
