From kitchen to spa: Surprising uses of coffee grounds
Coffee grounds have an extremely versatile application—not only in the kitchen but also in cosmetics and home plant care. It is worth putting them to good use, especially in the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations. Thanks to their unique properties, they will quickly eliminate not only smudges on the kitchen sink but also unpleasant odours, such as after frying carp.
Almost all of us brew at least one cup of coffee a day. Whether you use a coffee maker, a moka pot, or brew Turkish coffee, the waste consists of grounds that most often end up in the trash. If you use them as compost for your garden, you will enrich your organic mix. In urban areas, compost bins often get contaminated with waste that shouldn't be in the brown bin. In that case, you can use them at home much better.
What properties do coffee grounds have?
Once brewed, ground coffee is not suitable for making another drink, but that doesn’t mean the coffee grounds are completely devoid of nutrients. The grounds remain rich in minerals such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which positively affect plant growth.
Coffee makes the soil more acidic, creating a good environment for growing azaleas, hydrangeas, or rhododendrons. Coarsely ground beans improve soil structure, and the scent of coffee deters pests.
Use coffee to clean the kitchen
Coffee grounds are also excellent for cleaning the kitchen, for example, after frying fish or meat. The grains act like gentle sandpaper, so you can successfully clean the sink with them. Additionally, the aroma of coffee has a very useful ability to absorb other odours, so it will help clear the atmosphere after frying fish.
Coffee grounds in a home spa
You can prepare a home scrub from the fragrant leftovers of your morning cup. Just mix the grounds with a bath gel and a bit of body lotion. Massage this mixture onto thighs, abdomen, and buttocks, then rinse with lukewarm water. Used regularly, this treatment not only cleanses the skin but also leads to a reduction in cellulite.
You don't have to wait for a bath. Coffee grounds are also worth using for regular hand washing. They are great at eliminating unpleasant odours, so they will effectively restore aromatic balance after chopping onions or garlic.
