Genesis enters endurance racing with debut of new hypercar
The Koreans aim to make a stronger impact in the motorsport world. They have just unveiled a prototype race car and announced several key figures behind the project.
Another brand is joining the world of endurance racing: the Korean Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai. During the official premiere in Dubai, the shape of the Genesis GMR-001 hypercar was introduced, along with the first details about the racing project.
The GMR-001 is built according to LMDh class requirements, with support from Oreca and IDEC Sport for its implementation. The drivers set to first take the wheel of the GMR-001 are three-time Le Mans winner André Lotterer and 2023 IMSA GTP champion Pipo Derrani. Cyril Abiteboul, the former head of Renault Sport F1 and the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team director, will lead the team.
As part of their preparations for the full 2026 season, Genesis will compete in the European Le Mans Series in the LMP2 category next year. The team will comprise Logan Sargeant, Jamie Chadwick, and Mathys Jaubert.
"Motorsport is a natural step in the evolution of the Genesis brand," said Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis. "We want to bring our 'Athletic Elegance' philosophy to global tracks, highlighting our bold, progressive, and distinctly Korean values."
