Germany and Ukraine discuss pathways to lasting peace
The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, spoke with the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, on the phone. They discussed the possibility of initiating peace negotiations with Russia.
The German government spokesperson reported that the Chancellor welcomed the Ukrainian leader's willingness to begin peace negotiations with Russia as soon as possible.
Shared vision of peace
During the conversation, military and humanitarian issues were discussed, as well as ways to achieve a just peace in Ukraine.
The communiqué highlighted that both politicians recognized the significance of the American president's leadership, particularly in efforts to secure a swift ceasefire and establish lasting peace in Ukraine.
The first step towards peace could be for Russia to cease attacks on civilian energy infrastructure, both from the air and the sea. Scholz confirmed that Germany will continue to support Ukraine by working with European and international partners.
Solidarity and support
President Zelensky emphasized the importance of European unity regarding Ukraine on the platform X. "We rely on Europe’s unity around Ukraine and are working toward it. We all want a safe future for our people. Not a temporary ceasefire, but an end to the war once and for all. With our coordinated efforts and US leadership, this is entirely achievable", Zelensky wrote.
The Ukrainian leader acknowledged Germany's support in enhancing Ukraine's air defense. He emphasized the potential for expanding cooperation in this field, reaffirmed the commitment to further collaboration, and expressed gratitude to Berlin for its assistance.
