The German government wants to strengthen the German defence industry and prepare it for the new challenges posed by the war in Ukraine. The new security and defence industry strategy adopted by the government on Wednesday replaces the 2020 document.

The new strategic document states that Germany must become "defence-ready" as quickly as possible, according to the "Zeit" magazine's website.

According to the adopted strategy, Germany should invest more in cybersecurity and other technologies related to security and defence and recruit more specialists in key technological areas.

Companies based in Germany will be central to this effort, as they "generate a significant portion of their revenue from the security and defence industry." Key areas highlighted include information and communication technologies, artificial intelligence, ammunition, naval shipbuilding, tanks, and aviation systems.

More joint projects

It was also stated that the German government should work on more joint European defence projects and procurement.

The adopted strategy will open "a new chapter in the state's relations with the industry, in the spirit of Zeitenwende (a shift in German security policy announced by Scholz in February 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine - PAP)," said German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius while presenting the document.
