India shifts gears: Leasing Airbus A330 from France for 2026
India regrets the decision to purchase Russian Il-78s instead of the A330 from Airbus. They are now planning to lease an A330 MRTT from France, reports the Ukrainian portal Defense Express, citing the findings of Opex360.
For the past two decades, India has twice considered buying new refuelling aircraft, including the A330 from Airbus. However, so far, they've opted for Russian Il-78s, which they acquired in 2003. Now, due to their low reliability, India is reconsidering the purchase of the A330.
Problems with the Il-78
According to Opex360, the operational readiness of India's Il-78s is below 50%, meaning fewer than three out of the six aircraft in the Indian Air Force are usable. The minimum required level is 70%, which means at least four aircraft. The lack of an adequate number of refuelling aircraft is a problem, especially considering tensions with China.
In light of the issues with the Russian aircraft, India plans to lease one A330 MRTT from France for 2025-2026. French pilots and technicians will train their Indian counterparts in handling and operating these machines, a step towards improving the situation in the Indian Air Force.
Airbus offer
As early as 2020, Airbus proposed that India purchase six used A330 MRTT aircraft, which can be converted into transport or medical planes. Their power allows for operations in mountainous areas, which is important for India. However, past decisions by India's Ministry of Defence indicate a preference for Russian Il-78s.
The decision to lease the A330 MRTT from France could mark the beginning of a change in India's air fleet strategy. Cooperation with France may provide benefits in the form of modern technologies and better operational readiness. It is also a signal that India is seeking more reliable solutions in the face of growing geopolitical challenges.
To clarify, the mentioned Airbus A330 MRTT is an advanced aircraft that serves as an aerial tanker and transporter, based on the passenger model A330. Its fuel tanks have a capacity exceeding 110,000 litres, and its maximum speed is 880 km/h. This aircraft can fly at altitudes over 12,500 metres, with a range of nearly 15,000 kilometres, making it exceptionally effective in long-distance operations.
