What you need to know

  • What happened? On Sunday, Israeli rockets struck the main hospital in Gaza, destroying two of its departments.
  • What were the reactions? The Hamas government press office condemned the attack as a "horrific crime," accusing Israel of deliberately destroying health infrastructure.
  • What are the consequences? Patients were evacuated, and photos on social media show displaced families leaving the hospital.

Why did the attack on the hospital in Gaza occur?

The medical services at Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital evacuated patients from the building after receiving a phone call from the Israeli military warning of the attack. Israel did not comment on the attack.

Photos circulating on social media, which Reuters was unable to immediately verify, showed dozens of displaced families leaving the site. Some of them were dragging sick relatives on hospital beds.

How have people reacted to the attack?

In its statement, the Hamas government press office condemned the attack as a "horrific crime," saying that Israel intentionally damaged and shut down 34 hospitals in Gaza, as part of a coordinated effort to dismantle what remains of the region's healthcare system.

In October 2023, hundreds of people were killed in an attack on Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital. Palestinian officials blamed an Israeli air strike for the explosion. Israel said the explosion was caused by a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group, which denied the accusation.
