Japan's strategic vehicle aid bolsters Ukrainian mobility
Despite the large distance and complex export regulations, Japan has decided to send Ukraine approximately 100 vehicles of various types, along with a significant amount of protective equipment. It appears that the promised Mitsubishi Type 73-II Light vehicles have already arrived in Ukraine.
A photo of a Japanese Mitsubishi Type 73 Light off-roader has surfaced online in Ukraine. It is part of the batch of 100 vehicles pledged by Japan back in 2023. This batch also included the recently spotted Morooka PC-065B tracked vehicles, which are highly beneficial on Ukrainian backroads. Morooka PC-065B vehicles offer great utility on these terrains.
It is worth noting that 4x4 vehicles are always in high demand for logistical support or for transporting personnel beyond main roads. Although modified civilian vehicles are still widely used in Ukraine, vehicles specifically designed for such tasks, like the Mitsubishi Type 73 Light, are always a superior choice.
Mitsubishi Type 73-II Light — A versatile off-roader by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces
The Mitsubishi Type 73-II Light is a military-adapted version of the Mitsubishi Pajero, manufactured since 1996. It is designed to carry approximately 1,100 pounds of cargo. The core of the vehicle is a four-cylinder diesel engine with 125 horsepower.
The vehicles were produced in both unarmoured and armoured versions, with the latter being used during the Japanese humanitarian battalion's deployment in Iraq (Jietai Iraku Fukkou Shiengun) during the Second Gulf War. It is possible that these specific models have been delivered, providing protection against small arms fire and artillery fragments.
Interestingly, the Mitsubishi Type 73-II Light can be equipped with weaponry if necessary, such as a Browning M2 heavy machine gun or an FN Minimi family machine gun. Browning M2 or FN Minimi family machine guns are examples of such armaments.
