The washing machine is one of the most frequently used appliances in the home. Regularly cleaning its interior is crucial to avoid issues like unpleasant odours from the drum. The most common cause of this phenomenon is mould, which develops in hard-to-reach places such as the gasket, detergent compartment, or filter. Consistently maintaining the appliance's cleanliness extends its lifespan and ensures your clothes always smell fresh.
All you need is vinegar and water. The washing machine will shine
Vinegar and baking soda are currently the most popular home alternatives to professional cleaning agents. Baking soda effectively combats limescale, absorbs unpleasant odours, and helps to fight bacteria. On the other hand, vinegar is excellent at dealing with fungi and mould that may form in the washing machine. When combined, these products enhance each other's effects and can be used to clean many elements throughout the house.
To clean the washing machine, pour baking soda into the detergent compartment, filling it halfway. In the compartment designated for fabric softener, pour 125 ml (1/2 cup) of vinegar. Then, set the empty washing machine to the highest possible temperature. Once the cycle is complete, open the door to allow the drum to dry. Repeat this process once a month, and the bad smell will be a thing of the past.
Don't forget the rubber seal and detergent drawer
Mould can also develop in the washing machine's rubber seal. To prevent this, wipe the rubber with a solution of dish soap and warm water, then dry it with a clean cloth. Remember to dry the inner part of the seal with a paper towel after each wash.
When cleaning, don't overlook the detergent drawer. Remove it from the washing machine and thoroughly rinse it under running water. If there is dirt or dried detergent, remove it using an old toothbrush. Finally, thoroughly dry the drawer before placing it back.
