Kremlin strengthens Libya ties with strategic air bridge
The Kremlin has launched an air bridge connecting Russia with the Al-Khadim base in eastern Libya. This is where Russian mercenaries are stationed, according to data from the Italian service Itamilradar, which tracks aircraft flights.
The initiation of the air bridge is part of a broader strategy by Moscow, which, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, is focusing on eastern Libya.
According to the Itamilradar portal, two Il-76TD aircraft, belonging to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, have made several flights between Russia and Libya. These aircraft are often used in defence ministry missions. These flights were possible due to Turkey's approval, which has not closed its airspace to Russian planes.
The strategic importance of the Al-Khadim base
The Al-Khadim base plays a key role in Russia's operations in the region. It is used for transferring equipment and personnel to mines controlled by the Wagner Group in the Central African Republic. From this base, Russia also smuggles weapons into Sudan, which is subject to an embargo. This base is also home to Russian soldiers and mercenaries.
Russian activities in Libya
On Saturday, a Russian transport aircraft, previously stationed in Syria, landed in Libya. A Syrian security official, quoted by the Reuters agency, announced further transfers of Russian aircraft to Libya. Russia officially declares that it is holding talks with Syrian rebels to maintain its military bases in Syria.
In western Libya, controlled by the Government of National Unity, a Russian national was arrested on charges of activities harmful to public order. The Russian Embassy has warned its citizens against travelling to the western part of Libya.
