McDonald's unveils Minecraft movie set with playful twists
Starting on April 4th, the movie about the iconic game Minecraft will be available in cinemas. McDonald's restaurants are also joining the promotion by offering the Minecraft Movie set to fans of the game. Inside the set, there are two versions to construct and the option to enhance your experience with a dessert featuring popping sprinkles.
A colleague from the editorial office gave in to her son's requests, as he is a fan of Minecraft. They chose the set with Cheese Coins, which are round cheese bites in a golden breadcrumb coating. Classic nuggets were also an option. They opted for the expanded version, which included a McFlurry, topped with blocky cocoa sprinkles and white chocolate candies, which are said to pop like TNT.
Minecraft Movie Set – what's in the box?
For a young Minecraft fan, the contents of the box proved to be of little importance. Inside were the aforementioned coins, fries, a drink, Nether Flame sauce, and McFlurry with colourful sprinkles. However, it wasn't the food but the square box reflecting the game's main theme that captured the most attention.
The fries ordered for home delivery weren't as tasty as when dining in, which is understandable. The dominant flavour of the coins turned out to be the coating, and in texture, they resembled meat nuggets. Only after a moment did the cheese flavour become noticeable. Perhaps if purchased on-site, with a soft and gooey inside, they would deliver a much more enjoyable experience.
After tasting, it was time to examine the calorie count. The choice with coins proved to be much more caloric than the nuggets version. Six cheese bites in coating add up to 468 kcal, nearly as much as a Big Mac (544 kcal). The same number of nuggets only provides 262 kcal. But are they worth it?
The composition of Nether Flame sauce raises concerns
The young Minecraft fan didn't even glance at the spicy sauce included in the set; possibly, this addition is aimed at slightly older consumers. Maybe it's for the best—aside from its fitting name, there is nothing remarkable inside.
The ingredients of the sauce list water, distilled vinegar, and sugar at the top. This is followed by apricot puree and chili pepper. The sauce has a sweet and spicy taste, very similar to sauces in Chinese cuisine dishes. Classic ketchup worked better with the coins and fries.
Popping sprinkles might be a hit
The dessert, an optional addition to the Minecraft Movie set, performed much better. Admittedly, the actual appearance of the blocky sprinkles was less attractive than in the photos, but indeed – white chocolate-coated candies pop like TNT. Such additions naturally appeal to children's tastes. Therefore, I think that even if the basic set isn't a big hit, lines might form for the McFlurry with sprinkles.
How much for the Minecraft Movie set at McDonald's?
For the basic set on-site – with your choice of coins or nuggets – you'll pay approximately CAD 8.25. The expanded version with McFlurry and sprinkles costs around CAD 10.60. For delivery options, you need to add approximately CAD 1 in each of these two choices. People who order the set through the app with a promo code have a chance to win gadgets or boxes with collectible figures inside.
