Measles alert for Shakira fans after New Jersey concert exposure

Fans of Shakira who attended her concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey have been warned about possible measles exposure.

According to the "Daily Mail," the warning was issued by the New Jersey Department of Health, informing that potentially exposed individuals should watch for symptoms until June 6.

A person with measles was present at the concert. It is not known if they were vaccinated. The department's statement informed about the potential risks associated with the case of measles in a person who attended the concert while infected.

Anyone who attended the concert and suspects a measles exposure or illness should call a health care provider before going to any medical office or emergency department, as stated in the announcement.

Details of the case, such as the seating location in the stadium, which holds 82,000 people, or where the infected person came from, have not been disclosed. Currently, no related cases have been detected.

Measles is a highly contagious disease, with nine out of ten unvaccinated individuals contracting it after contact with an infected person.

The virus spreads through droplets released during coughing and sneezing, which can remain airborne for up to two hours after a person leaves a room. The disease begins with flu-like symptoms followed by a characteristic rash that appears, starting at the hairline and spreading throughout the body.

It is particularly dangerous for young children. According to studies, one in 20 unvaccinated children develops pneumonia, and one in 1,000 suffers from encephalitis, which can lead to permanent damage. One to three out of 1,000 unvaccinated children infected with measles die from the disease.

The United States authorities are urging vigilance and monitoring of symptoms in individuals who may have been exposed during the event. If symptoms occur, it is recommended to contact a doctor immediately.
