Merz falls short: German chancellor bid stumbles in first vote

The candidate for German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, failed to secure the necessary majority in the initial vote in the Bundestag on Tuesday. The candidate from the three-party coalition—CDU, CSU, and SPD—received support from 310 members of parliament in a secret ballot on Tuesday. He was short by six votes.
The required majority is 316 votes. The coalition holds 328 seats, indicating that some coalition members voted against their candidate.
The Bundestag session was adjourned.
