The tech giant is ramping up work on humanoid robots within Reality Labs, with plans to develop robots that assist with daily household tasks. Could this be a step into the future? Will having a robotic assistant at home become a common sight?

To kickstart the project, Meta plans to focus on household tasks for its humanoid robots. The company is also working on artificial intelligence, sensors, and software for robots produced by other firms. Currently, it is collaborating with companies like Unitree Robotics and Figure A.

AI as Meta's pillar

The goal of these investments is to strengthen key artificial intelligence models, such as Llama, and to advance programs related to mixed and augmented reality. Although the company is investing billions in AI development, progress in humanoid robotics remains slow.

While significant advancements have been made in language-related AI, this has not yet resulted in a better understanding of the physical world by robots. Meta has long been engaged in researching how to integrate artificial intelligence with robotics, aiming to create AI assistants capable of effectively interacting with their surroundings.

Competition is awake

Meta faces challenges from competitors like Tesla, whose CEO Elon Musk has announced the introduction of the Optimus robot. Tesla plans to roll out prototypes in factories by the end of 2025, with production commencing in 2026. Musk envisions Optimus contributing to a 25 trillion dollar (35 trillion Canadian dollars) valuation for the company.
