Mexican navy's historic drug bust nets CAD 201 million haul
The Mexican navy announced the completion of a maritime operation during which a record amount of drugs was seized in the Pacific—approximately 8,300 kilograms. The estimated value of the seized cargo amounts to CAD 201 million.
"Navy personnel seized 8,361 kilograms of illicit cargo, which represents the largest amount of drugs seized in a maritime operation, unprecedented in history," stated the Friday release from the Mexican Navy fleet.
The seizure occurred in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Lazaro Cardenas, a city located in the state of Michoacan on the western coast of Mexico. Twenty-three people were arrested in the operation.
The statement did not specify what exact drugs were seized or where they originated from.
The AFP agency recalled that the most significant drug seizure in Mexico took place in November 2007, when approximately 23,000 kilograms of Colombian cocaine were seized.
