Mexico vows to protect citizens amid Trump's deportation plans
We will defend Mexicans living in the USA, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured us on Sunday. These words were spoken the day before the inauguration of Donald Trump's administration, which announced the mass deportation of migrants from the USA.
As the new phase begins with President Trump's inauguration tomorrow, Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the primary focus will be protecting Mexican men and women living in the United States. She noted that consulates have already been strengthened with additional legal personnel to provide support.
The President of Mexico reminded us that over 30 million Mexicans live in the United States, significantly contributing to the development of the local economy. In 2024, Mexican immigrants sent $65 billion to their families in Mexico, which constituted 20 percent of their income. This means that 80 percent of their income remained in the USA.
Tensions between Mexico-USA
In addition to mass deportations, Trump announced the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico. Sheinbaum warned that Mexico might respond with retaliatory tariffs, which could lead to inflation and job losses on both sides of the border.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman to serve as President of Mexico, took office in October 2024. Her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, maintained good relations with Trump and helped curb illegal immigration.
