Key information

  • Pakistan conducted a test of the Abdali ballistic missile.
  • India considered it a provocation and an escalation of tensions.
  • Tensions have increased after the terrorist attack in Kashmir.

The Pakistani military announced the success of the Abdali ballistic missile test, which has a range of approximately 450 kilometres. The test aimed to assess the "operational readiness of troops and validating key technical parameters." Both Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed appreciation for the scientists and engineers involved in the project.

India responded to the test, describing it as a "reckless act of provocation and a dangerous escalation." The government in Delhi believes that, in the current situation, missile tests can only exacerbate the already existing tensions between the two countries.

These tensions increased after the terrorist attack in Kashmir on April 22. Twenty-six people were killed in the attack. India accused Pakistan of supporting terrorists, which Islamabad strongly denied. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that those responsible for the attack would be pursued.

As reported by the "Times of India", the Indian Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) imposed a ban on docking of ships flying the Pakistani flag in Indian ports. A similar ban was issued for vessels under the Indian flag in Pakistan.

Call for restraint

The UN Security Council and China have called on both countries to exercise "maximum restraint." Saudi Arabia and Iran have offered to mediate to prevent further escalation of the conflict. Kashmir, being a disputed territory, remains a strategically significant region for both nations.

The situation in the region remains tense, and further actions by both sides could affect stability in South Asia. The international community is watching the developments with concern, hoping for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
