U.S. President Donald Trump said that his conversation with Vladimir Putin went very well, and, as a result, Russia and Ukraine will begin negotiations for a ceasefire immediately. He noted, however, that the terms will be negotiated between the two parties.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, before a meeting with EU defence ministers in Brussels, was asked by journalists about this conversation. "I am very pleased that President Trump has taken on this leadership role. He basically broke the deadlock from day one when he entered into office in January," he responded.

"I think a positive point is that President Trump has also started opening up open lines of communication with the Russian president," he continued.

As he said, "we hope for results as soon as possible, but that's not always achievable because this is a complex conflict". "Again, let's be grateful that the Americans are now taking this position, this leadership role... I think it's a good sign that the phone call took place last night. It's good and positive," he added.

Trump's talk with Putin

The U.S. president said that his conversation with Putin went very well and added that he informed the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of France Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb about it.

"The Vatican, as represented by the Pope, has stated it would be very interested in hosting the negotiations. Let the process begin!" Trump wrote on social media.
