NATO has taken over from the U.S. the coordination of Western military aid to Ukraine. According to Reuters, this move aims to secure the assistance mechanism from President-elect Donald Trump's skeptical attitude towards the Alliance. As a result, NATO gains a more direct role in repelling the Russian invasion without directly involving its own armed forces.

Diplomats caution

However, diplomats caution that this change may have limited effects. Under Trump's administration, the United States could significantly weaken Ukraine's position by cutting its aid, which makes up the majority of military support to Kyiv. The headquarters of NATO's new Ukrainian mission, called NATO Support in Security and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), is located at the American base in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Previously, Western military aid to Ukraine was coordinated by the Ramstein Group under U.S. leadership, a coalition of about 50 countries. During his first term as president, Trump threatened to withdraw the U.S. from NATO and demanded that allies allocate 3% of GDP for military purposes, although NATO's requirement is 2%.
