OpenAI's social media gambit: Taking on Musk and Meta

Facebook and X are among the most popular social networking services. Could anyone disrupt their dominance? OpenAI, the American giant specialising in artificial intelligence, could be the one to do so.

The creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, continue to enhance their tools, as evidenced not only by new features in the popular chatbot but also by launching completely new models—GPT-4.1 was recently unveiled. Is OpenAI fully dedicating itself to the development of artificial intelligence? Leaks suggest not entirely.

Is OpenAI creating an alternative to Elon Musk's platform?

OpenAI is working on its social network resembling X (formerly Twitter). The project is early, but the internal prototype focuses on generating images through ChatGPT and includes an integrated social channel, reports TechCrunch, citing The Verge.

It is not entirely clear whether OpenAI plans to launch the new social platform as a separate application or integrate it with ChatGPT. If the project is completed, the company will compete with social platforms owned by Elon Musk, Meta, Facebook, and Instagram.

Training AI models is at stake

The new app would allow OpenAI to access real-time data needed to train its AI models, similar to X and Meta. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, is reportedly seeking input from outsiders regarding this project.

Although there is no official confirmation on whether the platform will be launched, the existence of a prototype indicates OpenAI's ambition to expand its range of services.
