  • The Shiite organization Hezbollah, operating in Lebanon, announced overnight from Thursday to Friday a "transition to a new, escalatory phase of confrontation" with Israel. They also stated that, for the first time, they had used guided missiles against Israeli soldiers, AFP reported. The Iranian-backed armed group claims that since the beginning of the ground operations in Lebanon on October 1, Israel's losses have amounted to 55 soldiers killed and over 500 injured, Reuters reported.
  • At the Holman prison in Alabama, Derrick Dearman, aged 36, was executed by lethal injection. He had been sentenced to death for killing five people in 2016. Dearman had previously withdrawn his appeals and requested that the sentence be carried out. "I am guilty. It would be unjust to the victims and their families to delay justice," Dearman wrote to the judge in April.
  • The Venezuelan authorities detained "another group of mercenaries" from abroad, including U.S. citizens, who planned to remove President Nicolas Maduro from power, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello declared on Thursday. Cabello, regarded as the right-hand man of the Venezuelan leader, accused the American CIA, the DEA drug enforcement agency, and the Spanish intelligence agency CNI of bringing mercenaries and weapons into Venezuela in collaboration with criminal groups.
