Thirty-eight-year-old Cody Balmer has been charged with arson at the residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The attack took place a few nights ago when Shapiro and his family were asleep. Balmer used Molotov cocktails that he had prepared himself to start the fire. This incident occurred following Passover celebrations.
In an interview with investigators, Balmer claimed his actions were in response to Shapiro's policy on Palestinians and his views on military actions in the Gaza Strip. He attacked because of the governor's faith.
According to CNN, Shapiro expressed his opposition to the governor’s actions concerning the Palestinian people, making it clear he would not support such plans. He called for an end to the violence affecting those close to him and pointed out that many individuals had already suffered greatly as a result of the governor's conduct. He also emphasized that attempts to intimidate his family, friends, and the Jewish community had ultimately failed. These statements were made several hours after the attack.
According to the "New York Post", the arsonist called 911 after the Sunday attack, introduced himself by name, and explained what he had done and where to find him. "You all know where to find me. I'm not hiding, and I will confess to everything that I had done," Balmer reportedly said.
It is known that the man climbed over the governor's residence fence. He then used a hammer to break a window and gained entry to one of the rooms, where he started a fire. He was inside the house for about a minute. It is unclear why Shapiro's security did not notice him. For the attack, he used gasoline from a lawnmower, which he poured into beer bottles. He stated that if he had seen the state leader, he would have attacked him with the hammer.
Balmer's mother, Christie, revealed that her son suffers from mental health issues and had stopped taking his medication before the attack. The family tried to get help, but he did not meet the criteria for involuntary treatment, according to the "New York Post." The media reported that when he was led out of the district court in Pennsylvania on Monday, Balmer mocked reporters by sticking out his tongue and making faces.
Balmer had previous legal issues. In 2023, he was charged with assault, and in 2016, he was charged with theft and forgery. According to ABC News, he worked as a mechanic. On social media, he expressed disdain for the Democratic Party.
Cody Balmer has been charged with eight offences, including attempted murder, burglary, arson, and terrorism. He faces up to 100 years in prison. Shapiro has been mentioned among candidates for the vice-presidential position in the event of a Kamala Harris victory. He is also among Democrats who might compete for the U.S. presidency in 2028.
