"This is how the Polish Krab howitzer fires towards Russian positions," wrote the Ukrainians, confirming that the artillery sent from Poland to the front lines is still active in clashes with Russian forces.

The initial shipment of Krab self-propelled howitzers arrived in Ukraine in mid-2022. This equipment was provided as part of the military aid package from Warsaw to Kyiv. Pleased with the Krabs, the Ukrainians promptly decided to order an additional 54 units along with supporting vehicles.

According to data from the creators of the Oryx blog, which tracks equipment losses for both sides in the ongoing conflict, 39 Krab howitzers have been taken out of action so far, either destroyed or damaged.

Weapon highly praised by Ukrainians

The Krab is considered a flagship product of Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. and the entire Polish defence industry. It represents a modern piece of equipment compared to other Western artillery systems, employing a 155-millimetre calibre gun, which is standard for this type of NATO weapon.

The basic shells used in Krabs have a range of about 30 kilometres, but shells with a gas generator can extend the effective range to about 40 kilometres. Moreover, tests of special Vulcano ammunition show that the Krab can reach targets up to 70 kilometres away. The standard firing rate is 2 rounds per minute, and in intense situations, it can go up to 6 rounds per minute.

The Krab is equipped with a Topaz fire control system from WB Electronics, as well as tracks and a 1,000-horsepower engine. According to Ukrainian soldiers, it performs well in challenging terrains, and on paved roads, it can reach speeds of about 70 kilometres per hour, which is higher than the manufacturer's specified speed of 60 kilometres per hour. Among other advantages of the Polish howitzers, Ukrainians often highlight their accuracy and overall reliability.
