Psyllium husk, also referred to as flea seed, has been a staple in natural medicine for centuries. Its seeds are rich in fibre, which supports gut health and helps maintain a healthy weight. Due to its protective and regulatory properties, psyllium husk is especially recommended for individuals with digestive issues, diabetes, or high cholesterol. How does it affect our bodies, and how can it be used?

Support for the digestive system

One of the most significant benefits of psyllium husk is its positive effect on digestion. These seeds are high in soluble fibre, which forms a gel-like substance when mixed with water. Because of this, flea seed:

  • Regulates bowel movements – it aids both constipation and diarrhea, stabilizing the function of the digestive tract.
  • Protects the intestinal mucosa – it promotes digestive health by shielding against irritations and helping treat ulcers.
  • Relieves symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – it helps alleviate bloating, stomach pain, and irregular bowel movements.

Help in regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels

Research indicates that consuming psyllium husk can help manage cholesterol and blood sugar levels. How does it work?

  • Lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) levels – the fibre in psyllium husk binds excess cholesterol in the intestines and aids in its elimination.
  • Regulates blood sugar levels – it slows down carbohydrate absorption, preventing sudden glucose spikes, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

These properties make psyllium husk an excellent addition to the diet of individuals concerned with heart health and those with diabetes.

Natural weight loss support

Psyllium husk can also benefit those looking to lose weight. Its seeds expand in the stomach, increasing the feeling of fullness and reducing appetite. Additionally, they slow down the digestion and absorption of fats, supporting weight control, and help maintain a stable blood sugar level, thereby preventing sudden hunger pangs.

Anti-inflammatory and skincare effects

Psyllium husk contains aucubin, which has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and regenerating properties. This makes it useful for external applications as well, soothing skin irritations such as acne or burns and accelerating wound healing. It’s also noteworthy that infusions and pastes made from these seeds can help with dry skin.

How to use psyllium husk?

Psyllium husk is easy to incorporate into your diet in various ways:

  1. Food additive – sprinkle it on yogurt, oatmeal, pudding, or salad.
  2. Seed paste – as used by my mom for many years. Simply pour about 100-150 millilitres of hot water over 1-2 tablespoons of seeds and wait a few minutes until it cools and is ready to eat.
  3. Herbal tea – similar to the paste, but the proportions are slightly different. Pour about 240 millilitres of hot water over 1 teaspoon of seeds and let it sit for a few minutes. The infusion is milder than the paste.
  4. Tablet supplementation – pre-made preparations containing powdered psyllium husk seeds are available.

It's important to not exceed a dose of 30 grams per day, and to drink at least two litres of water, as the fibre absorbs fluids significantly. Insufficient fluid intake can lead to constipation.

Does psyllium husk have side effects?

Although psyllium husk is a generally safe product, caution is advised for some individuals. People with intestinal obstruction or digestive issues of unknown origin should avoid its use, as the high fibre content may worsen symptoms. There’s also a possibility of an allergy to psyllium husk. If you experience a rash, itching, or breathing difficulties after consumption, you should stop using it. Lastly, it’s important to note that psyllium husk can affect the absorption of some medications. Therefore, it is recommended to take it at least an hour before or after taking medications to avoid interference with their effects.
