Russian air defenses falter as drones swarm Moscow skies
Hundreds of drones struck Russia's capital and its surroundings. Footage of the Ukrainian attack on the Moscow region surfaced online. The Russian air defense proved ineffective. The videos show Russians missing their targets while attempting to shoot down the approaching military drones.
The attack on the Moscow region occurred today (April 10) during the night. Footage appeared online showing hundreds of red dots flying over Moscow.
These are ultra-modern drones equipped with sound transmitters. Their mode of operation is similar to military helicopters. The weapon is easier to guide and harder to take down. Operators of the Russian air defense system have realized this.
In the social media materials available, it's evident that the Russians did not shoot down many of the incoming drones. They missed with the vast majority of their shots.
According to witness accounts on Telegram, most drones approached from the southwest side of the city. Loud explosions were also heard in Naro-Fominsk, located about 70 km from Moscow.
Some military aircraft circled the Moscow area for a considerable time, consistently avoiding Russian air defense missiles. Some aircraft evaded by the Russians left without any damage.
This is yet another drone attack on the Moscow region in recent weeks. The last occurred in March. The Russians destroyed a total of 74 drones. It is unknown how many unmanned aerial vehicles ultimately reached their objectives.
The Ukrainian military intelligence intercepted phone calls from Russians during the drone attacks. From these, it appears that some Russians living near the Ukrainian border (an area more frequently attacked) welcomed the shelling of the Moscow region with joy.
The intercepted individuals stated that "all Russians should feel what everyday life in this war is like".
